Explore

Explore is a signature project of the Annenberg Foundation developed and led by Charles Annenberg Weingarten, a Foundation Vice President and Director, through which documentaries, short films, photographs and videos are created to showcase extraordinary non-profit efforts around the world.

At its core, the project is a series of filmed and photographed site visits to non-profit organizations and leaders whose work has both local and global impact. While site visits are traditionally made as research for potential grant funding by the Foundation, they serve a dual purpose through Explore — to showcase independent voices and work from around the world that advances the values and vision of truly meaningful philanthropy. Grounded in the cornerstone of the Annenberg Foundation's mission--to advance the public well-being through improved communication--explore uses the power of images, music, dialog and written word to connect extraordinary people, ideas, communities and cultures.

The Annenberg Foundation invests in vision-driven nonprofit leaders and believes in the power of leadership and commitment to improving quality of life. Explore, as a project of the Foundation, will fund nonprofit efforts that fulfill its mission. Simultaneously, Explore will be a communications center to inspire global audiences. Thus, the project remains grounded in the cornerstone of the Annenberg Foundation's mission: to advance the public well-being through improved communication. Among the many nonprofit organizations that have been funded through Explore are 12K Foundation in Lhasa, Tibet, to support the Dickey Orphanage; Anwu Elementary School in Anwu, China; the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture; the Beijing Cultural Development Center for Rural Women; and Link Media, Inc.; The Tesfa Foundation, to support small schools in Ethiopia; Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre; and several others in India as a result of their most recently completed mission.
