Program Will Launch Nationwide Effort to Promote Civic Responsibility through Civility and Respect in Politics and Government SIMI VALLEY, CA: The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation announced today that the Annenberg Foundation has donated ten million dollars for educational outreach. The national program will focus on teaching students of all ages, K-12 through college, the importance of civility and responsibility in the government arena. Students will learn the importance of participating in the democratic process and working together - as Ronald Reagan did with government leaders of all political parties - for the common good. In honor of the Annenberg Foundation’s generous commitment to excellence in education, the Library’s Learning Center will be named the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center. “The friendship Ronnie and I shared with Walter and Lee Annenberg goes back many, many years,” said former First Lady Nancy Reagan. “To know that students of today and tomorrow, in every state, will benefit from this wonderful gift means the world to me.” “President Reagan stood for bold ideas but was always able to maintain civility and respect with those who opposed his views,” said Frederick J. Ryan, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. “Today, people on both sides of the political aisle feel that there is too much divisiveness and negativity in the political process at all levels. Ronald Reagan taught us that no matter what your beliefs are, in times of need we can work together and accomplish great things. The Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center will take a leadership role and utilize the unique resources of the Reagan Library and the power of the internet to create programs which will teach students about the Presidency and the ideas which make our country great - ideas which unite us, not perpetuate our differences.” Materials and programs built around President Reagan’s accomplishments and values of other great leaders will be used to teach students about civic responsibility, the U.S. Constitution, the American presidency and the democratic process through interactive, role-playing and decision-making leadership activities. Teachers will receive classroom-ready resources complete with lesson plans, activity guides, and photos as well as have access to important primary source documents. “The Annenberg Foundation believes very strongly in the importance of teaching students about civic responsibility, U.S. History and the American presidency,” said Leonore Annenberg, president and chairman of the Annenberg Foundation. “The Reagan Library is uniquely positioned to be able to provide students with educational resources that are unparalleled.” About the Annenberg Foundation: Established in 1989 by Walter H. Annenberg, the Annenberg Foundation provides funding and support to nonprofit organizations in the United States and globally through its headquarters in Radnor, Pennsylvania and offices in Los Angeles, California. The Foundation exists to advance the public well-being through improved communication. As the principal means of achieving this goal, the Foundation encourages the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge. www.annenbergfoundation.org About the Reagan Foundation: The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that maintains the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, the Center for Public Affairs, the Presidential Learning Center and The Air Force One Pavilion.
