The grant will extend over three years and will allow KCRW to experiment with a variety of online strategies.   “KCRW has long been regarded as a station ahead of its time,” says Ruth Seymour, KCRW’s General Manager.  “While other stations report on trends, KCRW sets them. Thanks to the Annenberg Foundation, we’ll have time to explore different methods that could provide the revenue to support our popular online services.”   KCRW has been a pioneer on the Internet, having launched its website in August 1995 and its three live streams – station simulcast, all-news and all-music – in 1999. KCRW is available on many platforms, including iTunes, Real Networks, AOL Radio, Shoutcast, Windows Media and Apple’s QuickTime.   Ms. Seymour believes that “public broadcasting faces unique challenges in the online world. We have spent years educating the audience about the relationship between listener contributions and programming.   “But that relationship doesn’t appear to resonate online,” she continued. “Many users listening on the Web may not even understand that they are hearing a real radio station. This is especially true for KCRW’s most successful podcast programs.”   Currently, KCRW.com generates more than 1.6 million live streaming hours per month on all of its platforms. In addition, the KCRW.com on-demand audio/video service received more than 470,000 connections in January 2007. During the same period, nearly 1 million KCRW podcasts were downloaded at AOL, NPR and KCRW.   The Annenberg Foundation’s grant enables the station to address the economic realities that the new technology has created. KCRW hopes that its experience developing online revenue will produce positive results and that those results will act as a model for other public stations to follow.   About KCRW:   KCRW-FM, licensed to Santa Monica College, is National Public Radio's flagship station for Southern California. The station serves Los Angeles and Orange Counties at 89.9 FM, Ventura County at 89.1 FM on KCRU/Oxnard-Ventura, the greater Palm Springs area at 89.3 FM on KCRI/Indio-Palm Springs and Kern and Northern LA Counties at 88.1 FM on KCRY/ Mojave/Antelope Valley. KCRW can now be heard in Santa Barbara at 106.9. Other translators carry the signal to the Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley areas at 90.7 FM, Gorman at 89.7 FM, Banning at 90.9 FM, the Ridgecrest area at 100.1 FM, the Thousand Oaks and Conejo Valley areas at 102.3 FM, Ojai at 102.1 FM, and Lemon Grove/Spring Valley in San Diego County at 89.9 FM. Every week, more than 500,000 listeners tune to the station for its eclectic and innovative non-commercial program schedule.
