The National Constitution Center will launch its re-vamped Constitution Day website at www.constitutionday.us on Monday, July 17, 2006 to serve as a national clearinghouse for schools, federal agencies and civic groups to help them organize events to commemorate Constitution Day, September 17. The website is part of the Constitution Center's ongoing commitment to Constitution Day programming nationwide, which is the cornerstone of the Center's role as a national leader in constitutional education and civic engagement. This initiative is under the auspices of the Constitution Center's Annenberg Center for Education and Outreach, and is funded by a generous grant from the Annenberg Foundation.

“The major upgrade of this website will, we hope, raise the profile of Constitution Day across the nation,” said Jane Eisner, Vice President for Civic Initiatives, who is overseeing the Center's civic outreach. “The ideas and values in the Constitution shape who we are as Americans today, and it's important that we understand the document, debate it, challenge it and cherish it. With www.constitutionday.us, we are trying to promote the kind of active citizenship our Founders envisioned.”

The website, www.constitutionday.us, was initially created in 2005 in response to a law sponsored by Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), one of the Senate's leading constitutional experts, requiring all educational institutions receiving federal funds, as well as all federal agencies and military bases, to hold programming on the Constitution on or around September 17.

The enhanced website will create an online community for anyone interested in teaching or learning about the Constitution, and will serve as a comprehensive tool to use in compliance with the Byrd legislation. The site has been designed with four different audiences in mind – educators, students, federal personnel, and community leaders – in order to reach an ever widening spectrum of participants and help all representatives of “We the People” mark the birthday of our government.

The new www.constitutionday.us will be an interactive community of resources, so that users can rate the offerings and offer comments and ideas to others. Easy search tools will help visitors find and download resources from multiple partners. The goal is for visitors to develop a sense of national community and support each other's efforts to celebrate Constitution Day and the year-round appreciation of constitutional values, issues, and challenges.

The website will serve as the central component of the Constitution Center's programming for Constitution Day. Other elements include national outreach programs, special on-site events during the week surrounding Constitution Day, and the creation of a new teachers' guide to the Constitution.

www.constitutionday.us has been created in partnership with the Annenberg Public Policy Center, American Bar Association, The Bill of Rights Institute, C-SPAN, the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, the Center for Educational Technologies, the Constitution Project, the Council for Excellence in Government, Court TV, and The National Archives, with other national partners joining this summer.

Atlassian Software Systems has generously donated its enterprise class wiki software, Confluence, as the foundation for the new Constitution Day website. Atlassian Software Systems is an innovative software company providing enterprise software solutions to the world's leading organizations. Atlassian has over 3800 customers in 60 countries, and has offices in Sydney and San Francisco. For more information on Atlassian, visit www.atlassian.com.

About the National Constitution Center
The National Constitution Center, located at 525 Arch St. on Philadelphia's Independence Mall, is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing public understanding of the U.S. Constitution and the ideas and values it represents. Opened on July 4, 2003, the Constitution Center is a museum, an education center, and a forum for debate on constitutional issues. The museum dramatically tells the story of the Constitution from Revolutionary times to the present through more than 100 interactive, multimedia exhibits, film, photographs, text, sculpture and artifacts, and features a powerful, award-winning theatrical performance, “Freedom Rising”. The Center also houses the Annenberg Center for Education and Outreach, which serves as the hub for national constitutional education and debates, and is a partner of NPR's “Justice Talking,” a program of the Annenberg Public Policy Center. Also, serving as a nonpartisan forum for constitutional discourse, the Center presents – without endorsement – programs that contain diverse viewpoints on a broad range of issues. For more information, call 215.409.6700 or visit www.constitutioncenter.org.
