LOS ANGELES (February 3, 2006) – The Annenberg Foundation has awarded a three year grant in the amount of $425,000 to the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Southern California Regional.

The Annenberg Foundation grant will enable FIRST to offset the cost of hosting the Southern California Regional while allowing the Executive Advisory Board time to build this regional into a self-sustaining annual program.  In addition, funds will be available to help those teams in need of financial assistance in order to participate in the competition.

“FIRST is an innovative and enriching program that motivates young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills,” says Wallis Annenberg, Vice President of the Annenberg Foundation.  “The Annenberg Foundation is pleased to be able to support such important work.”

FIRST attracts and inspires a diversity of students regardless of their background or previous academic success. More than 50 teams which will include inner-city schools, suburban schools, private and all girls' schools, and technical schools will be participating in the 2006 FIRST Robotics Competition Southern California Regional.

The FIRST Robotics program immerses high school students in the world of engineering and technology through partnerships with industry and education mentors to build a robot capable of performing a sports-like mechanical task.  This program promotes the values of teamwork, “gracious professionalism,” hands-on learning, and a balance between cooperation and competition.  These efforts show that education is engaging, science is exciting and the best role models for students exist in their own community.  In 2005, colleges and universities provided over $8 million in scholarships to students participating in the FIRST program.

The FIRST Robotics Competition Southern California Regional is a showcase for these students, giving them pride of accomplishment.   FIRST inspires in young people, their schools and communities an appreciation of science and technology and an understanding that can enrich the lives of all.

The FIRST Robotics Competition Southern California Regional will take place March 24 and March 25 at The Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA.  There is no charge and it is open to the public.
