CLAREMONT, CA:  Leonore Annenberg, President and Chairman of the Annenberg Foundation, has authorized a generous gift of $250,000 from the Foundation to establish an endowed Annenberg Scholarship Fund at the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, California. The fund will provide ongoing financial aid to enable students from diverse backgrounds to participate in KGI's unique Master of Bioscience (MBS) program. The Annenberg Foundation's gift will be met dollar for dollar with matching funds from the Sidney J. Weinberg Foundation creating a $500,000 endowed fund that will support student tuition in perpetuity.

Ensuring that the future of the life sciences is open to talented individuals from all backgrounds is central to KGI's commitment to institutional integrity and its role in society at large. KGI actively strives to reduce barriers and recruit women and underrepresented minorities to its programs. In order to attract and retain the best students, KGI believes in investing significant financial resources in need- and merit-based scholarship assistance. KGI admissions are need-blind and all students receive generous tuition assistance awards. This means KGI recruits students from diverse backgrounds, locally, nationally, and internationally without regard to financial status to fill the growing need for professionals in the bioscience industry.

This commitment to excellence and accessibility requires substantial endowment support. Endowed scholarship funds ensure that KGI's distinctive educational experience is accessible to all students who merit admission to the Institute, regardless of financial need. By generating increasing earnings over the long term these gifts “keep giving,” and provide for deserving KGI students in perpetuity.

Sidney J. (Jim) Weinberg, KGI co-founder and trustee chairman emeritus, established a $2.5 million challenge grant program to spur other donors to create endowed scholarships at KGI. Each gift of $250,000 for student financial aid is matched one-to-one, creating a $500,000 named endowment fund. To date, four endowed scholarship funds have been established with contributions matched by Mr. Weinberg. The Weinberg Challenge will match six additional gifts to scholarship funds, to reach the goal of establishing ten new endowments by June 2006.  By meeting the Weinberg Challenge, the Annenberg Foundation is helping KGI sustain its commitment to recruiting individuals from all backgrounds to participate in the life science revolution.

The Annenberg Foundation was established in 1989 by Walter H. Annenberg to advance the public well being through improved communication. As the principal means of achieving its goal, the Foundation encourages the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge.

Founded in 1997, Keck Graduate Institute is dedicated to education and research aimed at translating into practice, for the benefit of society, the power and potential of the life sciences.  KGI is the seventh and newest member of The Claremont Colleges.
