ATLANTA, GA: CARE announced today a $1 million grant from the Annenberg Foundation for the Earthquake and Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation Fund, a $25 million campaign in response to the crisis in South Asia. “This generous gift from the Annenberg Foundation will help CARE to respond to the immediate crisis, and help families rebuild their lives and livelihoods over the coming months and years,” said Peter D. Bell, CARE president and CEO.
The $1 million grant from the Annenberg Foundation targets aid to severely affected areas in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand where CARE is helping meet the urgent needs for relief supplies, food, safe water, sanitation and temporary shelter. In the longer term, it will help enable CARE to establish programs for overcoming psychological and social trauma, restore water sources, rebuild homes, reestablish economic livelihood, and support the overall rehabilitation of community infrastructure such as roads, schools and health clinics.
Leonore Annenberg, Wallis Annenberg and the family trustees said in a statement they “are privileged to provide these funds to CARE in a time of such need.”
