STANFORD, CA:  The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California, has announced receipt of a grant of $4 million from the Annenberg Foundation. The grant is being made at the request of Leonore Annenberg, President and Chairman of the foundation, and Wallis Annenberg, Vice President of the foundation. The gift will endow fellowships for scholars in communications to spend a residential year working at the Center.

Founded in 1954, the Center is recognized as a haven for researchers in any discipline who study human behavior. Each year, approximately 40 Fellows from the social sciences and humanities spend their sabbatical year at the Center.

Over the years, several researchers in communications have been CASBS Fellows. The most recent is Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Packaging the Presidency and The Press Effect: Politicians, Journalists, and the Stories that Shape the Political World. She spent the 2003-04 fellowship year analyzing political discourse in campaign ads and on talk shows. She rated her experience at CASBS "on a 1 to 10 scale, 15.3. On an earthquake scale, it was 1906."

To recognize and encourage outstanding research in the field, the Annenberg Foundation decided to fund one or two Fellows per year at the Center. A panel of raters is being formed to evaluate candidates, with the hope that the first Leonore Annenberg and Wallis Annenberg Fellow in Communications can be invited for September 2005 or 2006.

"The Annenberg gift is great for the Center and great for the field of communications," Doug McAdam, director of CASBS, said. "It will give us a chance to integrate an important and growing field into our program while giving the very best and most promising scholars in communications a chance to spend a year in the most stimulating interdisciplinary setting available to scholars."

CASBS

The Center trustees rely on a panel of experts to rate nominees for fellowships. Unlike most academic research grants, residential fellowships are awarded on the basis of accomplishment and scholarly promise rather than proposals for specific projects. While at the Center, the Fellows have the intellectual freedom, interdisciplinary stimulation, and support to engage new and challenging ideas, to think clearly and analytically, and to write more profoundly and prolifically than at any other time in their careers. The result has been an outpouring of books, articles, and collaborative studies that reverberate throughout American society and academia worldwide. For more information about the Center, please see www.casbs.org.
