How to Apply
Great leadership makes a difference. That’s why investing in the nonprofit sector’s most precious asset--its people--is among the Annenberg Foundation’s highest priorities. In any given year, the Annenberg Foundation may receive as many as 3,000 or more proposals. Due to finite resources and a very competitive process, about one in 10 requests are approved for funding.
Regions We Fund
The Annenberg Foundation places the highest priority on nonprofits serving constituents in the five-county region of Greater Los Angeles (these include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties). Agencies who serve the Greater LA region but are headquartered elsewhere can apply for a grant. It is highly unlikely that funding will be offered to an organization, initiative or project that falls outside of this area.

What We Fund
The Foundation generally awards grants in the following programmatic areas:
- Arts, Culture & Humanities
- Animal Welfare
- Civic & Community
- Human Health & Wellness
- Military Veterans
Grants range from $10,000 to a maximum of $100,000. In 2013, the average grant size awarded was $80,688. Equal consideration is given to applications for awards for general operations or program support.
What We Don’t Fund
- Capital campaigns/Building construction
- Multi-year commitments
- Grants to individuals
- Grants to nonqualified agencies
- Grants that fall outside the guidelines set by the Board of Directors
The Application Process
We accept proposals on a rolling basis. However, applications must be submitted no later than 45 days after the creation of an online grant application account. We know how valuable your time is, and we understand the time commitment involved in completing a grant application. As a result, the Annenberg Foundation is committed to responding to your grant request in a timely manner. We’ve provided these detailed steps to help you expedite your submission.
CURRENT AND RETURNING GRANTEES: Grants are generally awarded for a one-year grant period. Returning grantees are eligible to reapply for funding after the current grant period ends, and the final report is submitted to and approved by the Foundation. Nonprofits that have received two consecutive grants must wait twelve months from the end of their second grant period before applying for a new grant.
Step 1: Download a copy of our VISION+ Grantmaking Guidelines
The VISION+ Guidelines will help you understand how the Annenberg Foundation will assess your proposal. Our online grant application asks questions specifically related to these guidelines. Make sure to address each of the VISION+ aspects of our analysis in your proposal.
Step 2: Download a reference copy of our online grant application, our required documents checklist and a map of the Los Angeles County Service Planning Areas
Our online grant application asks questions about leadership and governance that may require input from your leadership team. We highly recommend that you carefully review the reference copy of the online application and VISION+ guidelines and prepare all required documents prior to starting the application process. Please note the word limits for some of the responses. The checklist will provide you with a description of the required documents. You will need to refer to the to the Service Planning Areas map to answer a question in the Organization Information section of the grant application.
Step 3: Download the required templates
We have provided templates that we require as part of our application. Please complete, save and be prepared to upload these documents. Proposals must be submitted utilizing these templates. Otherwise, they will be considered incomplete and will not be accepted.

- Budget Template - You will note that the Budget Template includes one tab for Organizational Budget information and a second tab for Project Budget information. The Project Budget tab is not required for requests for general operating support. If you are requesting support for a specific project/program, both tabs must be completed.
Step 4: Be prepared to upload the following required documents as part of your application utilizing your own templates:
- Organizational Chart
- Audited Financials or
- Unaudited Financial Statements (for organizations with a budget under $2 million)
- Organization Actual Year-to-Date Financial Statements
- Budget vs. Actual Year-to-Date Variance Analysis (If you are requesting support for a specific program or project, you must also submit a Project vs. Actual Year-to-Date Variance Analysis.)
- Be sure you upload your most recently completed fiscal year IRS Form 990 to GuideStar.
Step 5: Proceed to the online application
If you are unable to complete the proposal in one sitting, you have the ability to save the form and return to complete it at a later time. To save the proposal, please click the “save & finish later” button at the bottom of the page. When returning to complete the form, please use the personal log-in link you received via email when your account was established.

Upon submission you will receive an email confirming the Annenberg Foundation’s receipt of your application.
When Will You Hear From Us?
If your proposal passes our initial review, you will receive a phone call from the Annenberg Foundation’s program or grants team. Also, a site visit may be scheduled. Neither of these steps is an indication of funding. The Annenberg Foundation will communicate a decision about your proposal within 90 days of submission, depending on the volume of proposals received. Grant decisions are subject to Board-adopted guidelines and action.
